Dude, what happened to your books?

Hello Readers and Curious Passersby!

I have news...

My books have been unpublished. Yes, you read that right. They are no longer available. The reason? Under amicable terms, I've parted ways with Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing, so they are no longer accessible under the CHBB imprint. I thank CHBB for their support while I was part of their author family and wish them luck in all their endeavors.

So where can I buy your books now?

About that... If you're looking for my e-books or books, I'm sorry, but it'll be a while before you see them on sale again. Aside from the few print books left in my office and the last print batch left on Amazon, there are no more.

BUT WHY?!

For good reason!  I am proud to announce that I've accepted a publishing contract with Clean Teen Publishing, who will be releasing the series under one of their imprints. A date has not yet been set for release, but rest assured I will keep you updated. The last full-length novel in the series will be released under their imprint as well.

However, the Audible version of Creatura is and will remain on sale.

Thanks for your continued support. I'll get back to you with news about release dates.

Nely

Wolves of the Northern Rift by Jon Messenger: GIVEAWAY

photo Wolves of the Northern Rift Tour Banner.png

 photo Wolves-of-the-Northern-Rift.jpg
Title:  Wolves of the Northern Rift
Series:  Magic and Machinery #1
Author:  Jon Messenger
Published:   March 10th, 2015
Publisher:  Crimson Tree Publishing
Genre:  Steampunk
Content Warning:  Non-graphic gore/violence
Recommended Age:  16+
Synopsis:  In a world of science, magic is an abomination.
Magic is an abomination. It spread from the Rift, a great chasm hundreds of miles long that nearly split the southern continent in two. The Rift was a portal, a gateway between their world of science and the mythological world of magic .
On the northern continent of Ocker, King Godwin declared that no magical monstrosity would be allowed within their borders. The Royal Inquisitors were formed to investigate reports of mystical occurrences and, should they be found, to destroy them.
Inquisitor Simon Whitlock knows his responsibilities all too well. Along with the apothecary, Luthor Strong, they've spent two years inquiring into such reports of magical abominations, though they've discovered far more charlatans than true magical creatures. When assigned to investigate Haversham and its reports of werewolves, Simon remains unconvinced that the rumors are true. What he discovers in the frozen little hamlet is that the werewolves are far more real than he believed; yet they’re hardly the most dangerous monster in the city.

Excerpt:
Simon stepped into the hallway and pulled his door closed. He reached across the divide and straightened Luthor’s tie, which hung askew from the center of his neck. As he straightened the tie, he caught a scent of something foul in the air. He wrinkled his nose and glanced over his friend’s shoulder.

“Do you smell that? It’s atrocious. It’s a mixture of spoiled milk and gangrene. Please tell me that isn’t coming from your room.”

Luthor blushed slightly and looked over his shoulder. “I accidentally broke one of my vials when I was unpacking. It’s an unpleasant scent, to be sure.”

Simon frowned. “Please don’t tell me that was one of the liquids in that foul brew you gave me on the zeppelin.”

Luthor pushed his glasses back up his nose but remained silent.

“Luthor?” Simon asked, arching his brow inquisitively. “It wasn’t, was it?”

When the apothecary didn’t reply, Simon threw up his hands in disgust and stormed down the hall.

“In my defense,” Luthor said as he hurried to catch up, “you told me not to tell you.”

“I swear that you’re trying to poison me. You slip these terrible concoctions into my drinks just to kill me slowly.”

“There are actually indigenous tribes along the far eastern shores that intentionally ingest poisons in an attempt to build a resistance to the natural venoms that exist in their flora and fauna. Despite a wide spread acceptance of the practice, only a very small percentage of them actually die.”

“You find the most remarkable ways to try to defend your inane actions,” Simon said. “I’m not an indigenous tribesman from the eastern shore. Please stop trying to poison me.”

“I’d never poison you without your knowledge,” Luthor said before reconsidering his word choice.

“I guess I should be pleased that my friends will stab me in the face, rather than stabbing me in the back.”

Genre: NA Paranormal Romance
Coarse language, mild sexual innuendo
Recommended Age: 16+

~ Synopsis ~

All Blythe Sol ever wanted was to be a normal girl. Yet, her dreams of following in her father’s footsteps by joining the military after graduation are crushed when nuclear war comes to the United States in the year 4006. Tens of thousands are killed in a series of attacks on many major cities, while thousands more are left injured from the devastation of the blasts, or terminally ill from the effects of radiation.
When the government offers the sick and injured a second chance as part of the Restoration Project, how could they refuse? Hoping to put her life back together after the blasts take both her arm and her eye, Blythe enrolls in the program filled with hope. She never expects that the bionic additions will change her life so drastically. When it is discovered that those outfitted with the robotic parts have become enhanced beyond the limits of ordinary human ability, normal can never exist for her again.
The Bionics become targets of the government, as fear of them spreads across the nation, further enflamed by media propaganda and political conspiracy. Forced to go into hiding or face execution, society’s outcasts band together to form the Restoration Resistance—an underground rebellion which Blythe becomes a part of in order to survive. She could never imagine that joining them would thrust her at the forefront of an imminent revolution, or that it would put her in a confusing tug-of-war between two of her fellow soldiers—Gage Bronson, the mysterious new addition to the Resistance, and Dax Janner, her best friend. Even though Gage is rapidly capturing her heart, she is forced to face the possibility that her feelings for Dax might just go beyond friendship. However, with impending war and the threat of death hanging over her head, Blythe hardly has time to worry about anything as trivial as a love life…

When the airstrip comes into view, I know that we’re in deep shit. Jenica, Blythe, and the Professor haven’t even made it to the craft yet and are ducked down behind a row of hover bikes, taking cover. I can see our hijacked government craft several hundred yards away, its guns raised and swiveling on their turrets as Dax and Sayer try to help us pick off the MPs one by one. It is an impossible task—there are too many of them. The smart thing to do is run, but I know Dax won’t leave without the others. As I weigh my options as quickly as possible, I realize that there is no way we’re getting out of this together. I start across the tarmac, gun in one hand, raising my COMM device with the other.
“Janner!” I bark as Dax as I make a beeline for a craft parked on the other end of the airstrip. With so much manpower concentrated on the others, this craft is unguarded. I’ve never piloted a hovercraft in my life and what little I do know has come from watching Jenica at the controls, but I can’t think about that now. The MPs are closing in on Blythe and the others and there is nowhere for them to run. “Do you know how to fly one of these things?”
Dax’s voice—or rather, Sergeant Barnes’ voice—crackles over the speaker. “Not that particular model, but Strom does. What are you thinking, Bronson?”
“I’m thinking you need to get out of here and get our rescued prisoners home,” I say as I reach the hovercraft and proceed to climb up toward the closed hatch, all the while praying that it is unlocked.
“That’s a negative, Bronson,” Dax answers, yelling to be heard over the sound of gunfire. “We’re not leaving without our team intact.”
“That’s not exactly an option,” I answer, trying the hatch and find it open. I quickly scramble inside. “We’re going to have to split up. Put Strom on the line and tell him I need a five-minute piloting lesson. I’m going for Jenica, the Professor, and Blythe.”
Dax hesitates for a split second before I hear his heavy sigh over the speaker. “You’d better not get them killed,” he grumbles, and I can picture him grudgingly handling the COMM device to Sayer. “Or I will seriously kick your ass.”
“If I don’t do something, we’re screwed either way,” I retort before Sayer comes on the line.
“Strom here.”
“Strom, give me the basics,” I say as I run up the hovercraft’s center aisle and find the pilot’s chair. Rows of foreign buttons, gauges and screens line the panel in front of me. I watch through the window while the space between Jenica, Blythe and the Professor and the MPs grows smaller. I don’t have much time.
“See that clear plastic box to your right near the throttle?” Sayer asks over the COMM device.
I nod. “Yeah.”
“Pop it open and flip that red switch.”
I do as he says and immediately the hum of the hovercraft tells me it’s turned on. “Done.”
“There’s a series of silver switches to your left.”
I locate them. “Yeah, there are six of them.”
“Those control your elevation. Each one will lift you higher into the air. Flip the first two and that’ll get you high enough that you’re flying but still low enough to swoop down and grab Jenica, Blythe, and Professor Hinkley.”
I quickly follow his instructions and the hovercraft jolts as I flip the two switches, then it ascends, hovering several feet over the ground.
“Now what?” I ask, dropping into the pilot’s chair and fastening the harness. My hands shake as I grip the throttle.
“Fly,” Sayer answers before the connection is cut.

It only took Millie a few minutes to tally up the day’s business and put the money in the safe for Mr. Fegley to find the next morning. Quickly wiping down the counters, she made sure everything was tidy. She went into the back room, removed her apron, and took a quick look in the mirror that hung next to the back door. Wisps and strands of tawny hair had escaped the ribbon she tied it back in this morning, forming a messy halo around her pale, freckled face. In the threadbare, brown tunic and pants that were her normal work uniform, she looked drab and washed out. If she weren’t so clean, she could almost be mistaken for a beggar. She swiped at her hair, but it did no good. No matter. She didn’t have time to pretty up, and she wouldn’t be graded on her looks today, just her powers.

She jumped as the clock on the wall chimed the hour. There was less than half an hour left to get across town in order to make the evening test. If she were even a minute late, they would turn her away and she would have to wait six more months for another test date. Luckily, she’d saved up a whole buck so she could take the trolley.

Being sure to lock the door behind her, she ran out into the early evening twilight. She had just a few minutes to make it two blocks over to the magi-trolley line. Glancing down the street, she saw it was crowded with daytime shoppers hurrying home to dinner and the beginnings of nighttime shoppers coming out. Dusk and dawn were always the busiest time in this part of Old Nash City. The vampires who stayed out of the daylight to avoid severe sunburns and allergic reactions were venturing out and mingling with the norms and paranorms who had no such allergies to the sun. The shops and streets were usually crowded for the first hour or so past dusk.

Even as small and fast as Millie was, it would take her forever to slip through the crowd. She eyed the narrow alley to the right. The light from the blue-tinged crystal streetlights didn’t make it into the alley. It was dark and dirty. She hated walking through it even in the daylight, but she didn’t have much choice. Some things were just more important than her fear of the dark.

****

He leaned against the stone wall, deep in the shadows cast by the setting sun and the solar-crystal lights that illuminated the bustling street. This body was awkward and cumbersome. He’d used it too many nights now, and it was starting to get stiff. No matter. He would pick another from his store tomorrow. But for now, he needed to find new food—another worthy enough to fuel his body and perhaps become a vehicle for his spirit.

He scanned the crowd, using his second sight, his divine sight, to view the magical auras that pulsed around the unsuspecting people. They had no idea he was there, hunting, waiting for the perfect specimen. Of course, none of them had anything to worry about. Their auras were all dull and muddy. All no-to-medium powers. Not one bright aura in the bunch. None were worthy. He was just about ready to give up his search and move on to another street when a bright light caught his eye at the other end of the alley. He turned his full attention to the young girl moving quickly down the alley, as if she were afraid. Her magic burned brightly around her. Most people, common people, wouldn’t know what was inside the girl. But he did. Brilliant shades of purple and blue pulsed and shimmered around her. The colors of her aura were so dark and bright they were almost tangible. His fingers itched to reach out and touch it. She was brimming with untapped power. Oh yes, her power would be filling and delicious. She was worthy. He would have her.

The Title of Book 3 in the Creatura Series

HELLO, HELLO!

I hope you've all started off your New Year on a good note. I can't complain  because even if I did no one would hear me over here in Nely's Land of Fantasy and Whatnot. Let's get down to business...

Over the past months, I've gotten plenty of emails and messages asking about the title of book 3 and its release date. Most of them saying something like...

Some of your messages seemed urgent

And there were those who got a little violent

Then the holidays snuck up on me, and I got behind on writerly stuff and couldn't tend to my social media. I had company. LOTS of company. And in order to keep myself calm, I had to pretend I wasn't writing the last book in the series.

But now, I'm back! And without further ado, the title of book 3 is...

*DRUMROLL*

MARKER
of Hope

As for the release date, well, that'll be another announcement.  I know what you're thinking and...

I'm trying to go as fast as I can. But there's still much to do, like writing and finishing the cover and edits and more edits after that, but hey,

So stop giving me this face

Because

Okay we all know...

And I thank you for it.

I'll be back soon (I hope) with a cover reveal date and a release date for Marker of Hope. See you around the net. Thank you for stopping by!

x,
Nely

Amazon | GoodReads

Excerpt
I’d met Catherine Maddox (now the widow Catherine Frachitti) through a friend of mine. My best friend, in point of fact. Bill Henly.
While they were dating.
That tidbit must sound inherently evil. There are rules, especially among guys. The Man Code, to be more specific. Every male on the planet is born with these rules branded into his DNA. Don’t date a friend’s ex, don’t have sex with a friend’s girlfriend, so on and so forth.
Let the record show that I am no home wrecker! Bill and Catherine had been seeing each other when I met her. Nothing serious, and for reasons only known to them, their relationship didn’t last. After Bill did the requisite guy thing (read: talked post-breakup smack about her), I did the right thing and asked him if he’d be okay with me asking her out.
The conversation went something like this:
Me: So, you’re not dating Cat anymore, huh?
Bill: Nope.
Me: Um, would it be cool if I asked her out?
Bill: Yeah, sure.
It was a conversation for the ages. A manly conversation of epic proportions. It may seem flimsy to an outsider, but to guys it was volumes’ worth.
I let the breakup embers fade, and a few weeks later, when I’d mustered up the testicular fortitude, I asked Catherine out. After a moment’s thought, she said yes. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Dating Catherine put no apparent stress on my relationship with Bill. Good looking in an All-American way, he never lacked for female companionship. At six-foot-five and almost as broad, he towered over my meager five-foot-eight. He’d played football in high school and college, earning an athletic scholarship to Princeton University, but blew out his knee in his second year. His spare time no longer filled with practices and games, he hunkered down and focused on his studies which paved the way to his future career as a financial advisor. Still, he remained an ever faithful workout freak. The combination of good looks, muscular build, and his large salary lured many a willing woman into his bed. Catherine was no exception, but that wasn’t entirely Bill’s doing.
The story is a simple one. Back in the day the three of us were nigh inseparable. Catherine and I were always double-dating with Bill and his love du jour. Even if he wasn’t seeing anybody (the exception to the rule), the three of us would go out to eat, see movies, hang out on lawn chairs in the summer drinking concoctions with little umbrellas in them.
It was on one such occasion when things took a change for the pornographic. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live. Or as long as I’m dead.
That day is where this story truly starts.

About the Author
Matt Schiariti is an Engineeer by profession, guitar legend in his own mind, and would-be author, time permitting. When he’s not writing, he’s reading. When he’s not reading, he’s enjoying a beer sporting a fancy name on the label. When he’s not enjoying a fancy-named beer, he’s most likely reading some more. Sometimes he does all three at once, to disastrous effect.

Matt lives in southern New Jersey with his wife, two children, and insane dog. Funeral with a View is his second published novel, but not his last.

You have been warned.

Guest Post
First off, I want to thank Nely Cab for taking part in the Funeral with a View blog tour. I appreciate the opportunity to post on your page.
Today’s topic is, “What do you think about this book being turned into a movie?”
What writer wouldn’t want to see their novel adapted to film, am I right? I can picture it now: Fame, fortune, swimming in an oversized tub filled with gold doubloons, lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills even though I don’t smoke cigars but would anyway just for the simple fact that I could, red carpets, hobnobbing with the Hollywood elite, winning the “Greatest Book to be Turned Into a Movie EVAR” Award, interviews with my old English teachers from high school in which they take credit for my literary genius even though I rarely participated in class, people coming out of the woodwork and claiming I owe them money. Good times. Good times indeed.
Now that I’ve taken a moment to get my head out of the clouds, I may as well discuss why I think it could be a movie.
Funeral with a View is a character driven story that takes readers on a journey through the last ten years of Richard Franchitti’s life. He’s a father, a husband, a hard worker. He’s also dead. Therein lies the twist. I killed off my main character at the beginning of the book. Don’t worry, this is hardly a spoiler as the description comes right out and says he’s a disembodied spirit. And it is a romance, make no mistake about that. How can that be? Well, Ricky’s tethered to his body and ends up observing his own funeral. As he does so, he flashes back on poignant moments in his life and tries to figure out why he hasn’t moved on. Something’s keeping him here. Will he find out what it is? The result is a rollercoaster of emotions as Ricky gives you a front row seat to both the best and worst times in his life. Love, hate, happiness, sadness, loss … as the old Ragu commercial says, “It’s in there.” The romance is in Rick’s life and how he lived it, from falling in love, to becoming a father, and all points in between.
One person who was kind enough to read and review the book compared it to The Lovely Bones and If I Stay. Those books (which I have never read, nor have I seen the movie adaptations) were made into smash hit movies, so why couldn’t Funeral with a View be turned into one? Maybe the timing is perfect and this blog topic is a portent of things to come! Or maybe it’s just pure coincidence. Time will tell. Still, what sets this apart from other books in its genre, I think, are the characters. They’re people you know, normal folks dealing with a host of problems that could happen to anybody. There are no billionaires, musical prodigies, geniuses of any kind. They may remind you of someone you know or someone you’re related to. They could be a friend of yours. They could have gone through something you’ve gone through yourself. That’s why I think people can not only relate to the book, but would be receptive to a film adaptation. It would be like viewing a friend’s life story told in moving pictures.
How would I go about getting it made? That one’s simple. Reverting back to my earlier pipe-dream state, Christopher Nolan calls me up and tells me he’s read my book and he simply must make it into a movie. In fact, he goes so far as to tell me he’ll up and quit the whole business if he can’t work with me. Not to seem too eager, I’d let him sweat it out for a bit before I said yes. Once we establish our partnership, I let him run with it because he’s a frickin’ genius, and that’s all there is to that.

So now you know what I think about Funeral with a View being turned into a movie. I’m sure you’ll all be able to sleep better at night knowing my feelings on the subject. Until such time as I’m fortunate enough to see my novel turned into film, perhaps you’d like to read it and let the movie projector of your mind put images to my words. Movies are great, but nothing’s better than our own imaginations, wouldn’t you say?
